ten reasons i love farmer’s markets

I am a total pushover for a good farmer’s market. And lucky for me, my children are too. My oldest reminds me which market is open on which day. I love it.

For us, we love them for the inspiration, the buzz, but most of all, the DELICIOUS finds. Going to farmer’s markets are much more exciting than walking into our local supermarket {which I try to avoid and am thankful my husband is the grocery shopper}. Grocery stores are open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, whereas a farmer’s market is not. That reason alone creates the buzz that surrounds packing the children up in the car and heading to each one.

10 REASONS I LOVE FARMER’S MARKETS:

1. FRESHNESS.

There’s an incredible vitality in the food at farmer’s markets because it is so fresh. I love that when I buy a dozen just-laid brown eggs, or sugar-snap peas, organic strawberries, kale or green onions, that were just picked yesterday. Food tastes so much more better when it travels 10 miles, opposed to 1000 miles.

Until you have eaten a farm-fresh egg opposed to a grocery store egg {with a farm on the carton}, you do not know what you are missing. Try it.

2. MARVELOUS SMELLS.

Walking up and down the aisles of the market I smell bold green onions, sweet strawberries, aromatic wildflower bouquets, homemade salsa, fresh herbs. This is very different from the supermarket, where I smell… nothing.

3. OUTDOORS.

There is something exhilarating about shopping outdoors while enjoying the beautiful summer weather! Beats being stuck inside a stuffy grocery store for an hour, running into the same people aisle after aisle, while your kids are having a meltdown. And, it’s inevitable that I always forget something {once or twice} halfway across the store.

4. SUPPORT LOCAL.

Need I say more?

5. TRADITION.

I’m a tad over the top when it comes to creating family traditions. I want my children to grow up remembering the special things we did as a FAMILY, the special traditions that we have made together. One of MY most favorite memories as a child, is packing up my pillow and blanket, climbing into the back of my Dad’s Blazer {with my younger brother} and taking a road trip each Sunday to Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago, Wisconsin. We’d eat in the parking lot under the huge weeping willow tree, just the four of us.

Similar to our Disney vacation each year, this family tradition is so special to us. It is much more than just another weekly errand, it is a tradition we look forward to, and one that I hope continues into their adulthood.

6. BEAUTY.

There is a real, raw beauty at farmer’s markets that reminds me of the all loveliness and diversity in nature. Each week we are introduced to new and beautiful produce, not found at the local supermarket. We’ve seen black raspberries, heirloom tomatoes, purple carrots, and the most perfect, teeny-tiny strawberries, ever!

Not to mention, the most gorgeous wildflowers that rival my wedding bouquet {and those fuchsia roses of mine were stunning}! These little old ladies are so incredibly talented, putting together the perfect bouquets of flowers. To die for, gorgeousness.

7. MEAT

The farmers that we have met at our local farmer’s market treat their animals with respect. They graze on green grass, they are not given hormones or antibiotics, they are happy. As a result, the meat is good for us, tastes amazing, but most importantly, the animals were raised humanely.

8. IN SEASON

The variety from week to week is a true display of what is in season. Even my oldest son is able to identify which fruits and veggies are in season. One week there is an abundance of sweet strawberries and sugar-snap peas, the next week they are gone, and in their place are flavorful tomatoes and crisp green beans. For us, this means enjoying the food at the most ideal time with impeccable flavor. Next week it will have changed yet again, reflecting the food that is in their glory.

9. HIDDEN GEMS.

We often find amazing little secrets at our local farmer’s markets. Raw honey, homemade baked goods, kettle corn {a favorite of ours}, and… chocolate! ;) Each week brings something new, and delicious.

10. HAPPY CHILDREN.

This is my {most} favorite reason for going to the farmer’s markets each week. My kids wander up and down the aisles, holding hands and smiling, just taking it all in. They look so innocent and happy while enjoying the ambience of what is around them.

The market is an excellent place to teach my children where their food comes from, how to choose perfect produce, and what exactly healthy and responsible eating is.

I give my three-year old and seven-year old a few dollars before getting out of the car to pick out a few items that they would like. My oldest usually saves his money for the food trucks {surprise, surprise}, but my youngest is all about the produce. He sure knows the way to his mama’s heart.

So, those are the reasons WE LOVE our local farmer’s markets! The food, freshness, beauty, variety and abundance all carry with them a happy energy.
